CHEVROLET CAMARO DROPS ITS TOP
General Motors Canada ushered in the Camaro Convertible on a drive from Oshawa to Bobcaygeon, Ontario using several roads including winding Highway 507 that tested Camaro's handling. The Camaro Convertible offers many features of interest to Executive fleet operators.

The power soft top cycles in 20 seconds and is Z-folding. The top is designed to imitate a coupe-like look

“Our goal in development was to make the convertible match the coupe as closely as possible in ride quality, handling and overall performance,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro Chief Engineer. “To compensate for the reduced structure of an open car, engineers often will make the suspension softer, making the convertible a boulevard cruiser. Instead, we took the more difficult, but better path of bolstering structure rather than softening the suspension. We didn’t change a strut, bushing or spring rate from the Camaro coupe.”

“The launch of the new convertible opens Camaro design and performance to a new set of potential customers,” said Marc Comeau, Vice-President of Marketing, Chevrolet Canada. “The 21st century revival of Camaro has been tremendously popular, and that is testament to the top-quality work being done at our Oshawa Assembly Plant.”

Performance is key for the Camaro. Two engine choices are available: a 3.6 litre V-6 with 312 horsepower and 278 ft-lbs of torque mated either to a six-speed automatic or a manual transmission; and a 6.2L V-8 with 400hp and 410 ft-lbs of torque on an automatic six-speed transmission, and 426hp and 420 ft-lbs of torque on a six-speed manual transmission.

The 3.6L V-6 engine shows improved fuel economy by combining the exhaust manifold with the cylinder head in a single aluminum casting.

“The new, patented design benefits the customer in all the key areas without any tradeoffs, said. Ameer Haider, Assistant Chief Engineer for V6 engines, GM.“Emissions, performance, fuel economy, and noise all improve with the integrated exhaust manifold.”

Camaro Coupe and Convertible are both built at GM’s Oshawa Assembly Plant.
