TOYOTA REDESIGNS TACOMA FOR 2016
The Toyota Tacoma has been sold in North America since 1964 and has amassed sales of over seven million units. It sold over 1,000 units into fleet in 2013 according to data from IHS Automotive driven by Polk. However, with new competitors like the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon from General Motors, and an updated Nissan Frontier on the horizon, Toyota has decided to revamp the Tacoma.

The 2016 model will have a completely redesigned front and rear fascia with a larger grille reminiscent of its big brother the Tundra. It also borrows the stamped name look from big brother with TACOMA highly visible on the back of the tailgate. The 2016 model offers projector beam headlights with optional LED DRLs. The new Tacoma has been made stronger by increased use of high strength and ultra-high strength steel.

“Trucks have long played an important role in the fleet business, but many customers don’t need a full-size pickup truck,” said Octavio Dacosta, National Manager, Toyota Division. “That provides our Toyota Tacoma with a unique niche, able to provide the utility of a pickup truck but in a more manageable size and with better fuel efficiency. And of course, with the Tacoma, fleet operators know that they and their customers can count on the renowned quality and dependability of Toyota, which has more than 70 years of experience building great trucks.”

Powering the new Tacoma is a choice of either a 2.7 litre four-cylinder engine or a 3.5L V-6 with D-4S technology that offers both direct and port fuel injection. Both engines will be available with a six-speed automatic transmission, but the V-6 will also be made available with a six-speed manual transmission.

Tacoma will feature an array of off-road technologies to aid the driver. First is multi-terrain select with allows the driver to select the type of ground on which the vehicle will be driving on and optimize the truck for those conditions. Next is crawl control, which can be set to one to five miles per hour with the vehicle automatically braking and accelerating, while the driver needs only to focus on steering.

“Adventurous Canadians have always enjoyed pushing Toyota trucks to the limits,” said Larry Hutchinson, Vice-President, Toyota Canada Inc. “Designed, developed, and assembled in North America the all-new 2016 Tacoma is a tough truck that rewards spirited truck enthusiasts on and off-road.”

Four trims will be available; SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited, each with varying levels of equipment. Each trim level is available with 4x2 and 4x4 configurations. Premium features that are also available are: wireless charging, smart key with push button start, leather seats, power moonroof, dual-zone climate control, touchscreen radio, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert.
