A panel of journalists named 2011 Chevrolet Volt as the 2011 North American Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. “Since development began, we believed the Volt had the potential to transform the automotive industry,” said Dan Akerson, CEO, General Motors. “Today, the Volt is the first electric vehicle to win the prestigious North American Car of the Year award.” Volt also recently won Motor Trend 2011 Car of the Year, Green Car Journal 2011 Green Car of the Year; it was among Car and Driver’s 10 Best for 2011 as well as Automobile Magazine’s 2011 Automobile of the year. Nissan Canada reported a Letter of Agreement to consign 500 Leaf electric vehicles to the Toronto Atmospheric Fund’s FleetWise EV300 program. “In order to assist with the wide-spread adoption of electric vehicles, partnerships like this are crucial to demonstrate the commitment of both manufacturers and consumers to zero-emission mobility,” said Allen Childs, President, Nissan Canada Inc. “Fleets are an important part of the launch strategy of the Nissan Leaf globally and in addition to sales opportunities, fleets provide an understanding of how best to support electric mobility in that region.” November 19, 2010 ![]() 2011 Chevrolet Volt in New York City. General Electric (GE) announced it would buy 25,000 electric vehicles by 2015 for its own and for vehicles in its Capital Fleet Services business. GE plans to convert half its fleet to electric. General Motors (GM) vehicles will make up 12,000 of the initial purchase, including the Chevrolet Volt in 2011. “Electric vehicle technology is real and ready for deployment and we are embracing the transformation with partners like GM and our fleet customers,” said Jeff Immelt, Chairman and CEO, GE. “By electrifying our own fleet, we will accelerate the adoption curve, drive scale, and move electric vehicles from anticipation to action.” October 26, 2010 ![]() Chevrolet Volt at charge station. The state of Michigan will install more than 5,300 home and workplace charging stations to accommodate electric vehicles. DTE Energy and Consumers Energy will each install 2,500 240V home charging stations, and cover up to $2,500 in charging station and installation costs. General Motor’s Voltec 240V charging station costs $490; installation, $1,475. GM plans to roll out 350 charge stations at its own facilities in Michigan, 100 are already installed. “Since our homes may soon be our fuelling stations of the future we believe the most important way to make communities ‘plug-in ready’ is by enabling residential charging,” said Tom Stephens, Vice-Chairman, Global Product Operations, GM. ![]() Imperial Oil attains TOP TIER standard. Imperial Oil, which operates 1,850 Esso stations across Canada, has attained the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standard for all grades of gasoline. BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Audi developed the TOP TIER Standard rating. The standard exceeds minimum EPA detergent requirements. November 9, 2010 DIESEL FROM ANIMAL FATS Dynamic Fuels LLC, a joint venture of Syntroleum Corporation and Tyson Foods Inc., is converting non-food animal fats and greases into renewable fuels such as diesel at its Geismar, Louisiana plant. “Our U.S plant is producing some of the highest quality diesel fuel in the world, and best of all, it is renewable with a carbon footprint 75 per cent below that of petroleum diesel,” said Gary Roth, CEO, Syntroleum. The plant can produce 75 million gallons of renewable fuels per year. FORECAST FOR CRUDE OIL PRICES AJM Petroleum Consultants issued a crude oil price forecast for 2009 and beyond. According to AJM, prices of crude are expected to rise to $55 in 2009, $75 in 2010, $85 in 2011, and $95 in 2012 and stabilize at $100 (all in USD) in 2013. “With the current world recession influencing demand, there appears to be a surplus of supply, so much so that OPEC has tried to remove 4.2 million barrels per day from the market. Canadian oil sands projects are being delayed or cancelled,” said Ralph Glass, vice-president of operations, AJM. He added, “AJM believes the drop in demand will not be permanent.” LOCAL GAS PRICES
