APRIL SHOWERS NO MATCH FOR FCA'S POWERS

A large and robust group of fleet professionals braved the elements to attend FCA Canada Fleet Operations 2018 Launch Event in Toronto.

Ken Tuckey, Senior Manager, National Fleet and Commercial, welcomed guests to the event, outlined the three vehicles being highlighted: 2019 Ram 1500, 2019 Jeep Cherokee, and 2018 Jeep Wrangler, and thanked attendees for their business. Three modules followed, each outlining features of the new vehicles.

RAM is focused on four pillars for the 1500. Strength: the 2019 model has improved structural rigidity, 98 per cent high strength steel in the frame, and 54 per cent in the cab and box. Capability: max towing has improved to 5,783 kilograms, payload up to 1,043kg, offers largest brakes in its class and is the most aerodynamic truck in its class. Technology: availability of Uconnect 4C NAV with 12-inch touchscreen, over 100 standard and available safety and security features, and a plethora of premium technology features. Luxury: brand new exterior with available LED headlights and 22-inch wheels, raised beltline and bed, and new interior themes, accents, and a panoramic sunroof.

Jeep Cherokee offers a redesigned front fascia and comes with available LED headlights, DRLs, and fog lights. A new 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine with start/stop technology with 270 horsepower and 295 ft/lbs of torque joins the 2.4L I-4 and 3.2L V-6 engines, all are paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Interior is redesigned to optimize space, with rear cargo space growing by over 76mm. Fourth generation Uconnect system is available with seven or 8.4-inch touchscreen displays, it is faster, crisper and offer pinch-to-zoom capability, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The iconic Jeep Wrangler is updated while maintaining its traditional look and feel including a seven slot grille in homage to the much loved CJ models. A 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine with eTorque joins the 3.6L Pentastar V-6 engine, both are mated to a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. Three roof types are now available: new Sky One-Touch power top, soft top, and hardtop (which is lighter and easier to remove). The doors are made of lightweight aluminum, making for easy removal as well. Other features of Wrangler include a redesigned centre console, fourth-generation Uconnect system, standard rear backup camera, and available blind spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection.

A demonstration of how the Ram 1500’s air suspension assists trailer hookup rounded out the event.
