The CAA South Central Ontario, Provincial Towing Association (Ontario) (PTAO), Ontario Government and Ontario Provincial Police are urging Ontario drivers to leave a safe distance for tow truck drivers to work on the provinces highways. The reminder comes just ahead of the one year anniversary of Ontario's establishment of the Slow Down, Move over law and coincides with Tow Safety week.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, OPP shared the challenges faced by emergency serve providers working on highways.
"At CAA, we believe everyone deserves a safe place to work, even at the side of the road." said Cindy Hillaby, CAA.

Tow Safety Week is also a reminder that as of January 1, 2017 tow truck operators will be required to have a Commercial Vehicle Operators Registration (CVOR) certificate. Whether involved in a collision or a mechanical breakdown, drivers need to know their rights before authorizing a tow.

"Its important for drivers to ask questions before any work is done. Make sure the towing company can provide a rate card and has appropriate insurance coverage. Always let the tow operator know where to drop off your vehicle and ask for a detailed invoice listing services provided and costs." said Joey Gagne, President PTAO.

BIG FIVE ECONOMISTS: NOT SO SUNNY DAYS AHEAD

Andrew Bell, BNN, was the facilitator for a panel of chief economists
Andrew Bell (left), BNN, was the facilitator for a panel of chief economists.
More than 1,000 business leaders attended the Economic Club of Canada’s 2016 Outlook breakfast meeting to hear how the chief economists from Canada’s ‘Big Five” financial institutions see the year ahead unfolding. A sobering message greeted those not completely recovered from New Years revelry.

Douglas Porter, Chief economist for BMO suggested that as a result of a variety of internal and external factors, Canadian economic growth will do little better in 2016 than the 1.2 per cent growth it achieved in 2015.

Beata Caranci Chief Economist for TD Bank supported that view stating that “next year, we will likely be talking slow growth again because circumstances are unlikely to change.”

Craig Wright, Chief Economist for RBC opined that “2015 really was a write off for Canada and 2016 is waiting for a lift from the lower Canadian dollar."

Avery Shenfeld, Chief Economist for CIBC added to the consensus view stating "financial markets are recognizing that 2016 is still going to be a pretty disappointing year for the global economy.”

The events wrap up suggested that it’s a good time to adjust expectations to a low growth future but that given Canada’s strong ties to a modestly resurgent U.S market and, courtesy of Warren Jestin, Chief Economist for Scotiabank ,“Canada remains the best country in the world”, things could be worse.
