The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) named the winners of 14 vehicle categories as part of the 2018 Canadian Car of the Year and 2018 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year awards.

“Our voting policy was changed this year to make it more relevant for today’s car buyers,” said Mark Richardson, President, AJAC. “Our journalists are all experts in their automotive fields, and I’m very proud of their ability to help people decide on the best new vehicles to buy in 2018.”

Multiple wins for a variety of OEMs was the order of the day, as Mazda and Jaguar Land Rover each won three awards, Honda/Acura, Volkswagen, and FCA, each won two, while Volvo and Mercedes-Benz won awards as well. In all, seven OEMs took home awards.

"We are very proud to accept these awards from Canada's automotive experts, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. The Mazda3, CX-5, and CX-9 clearly stand out in their respective segments, and each one represents a different, but unified take on the best that Mazda has to offer for the Canadian consumer," said Masaharu Kondo, President, Mazda Canada. "Each of these vehicles features Mazda's signature dynamic handling characteristics, head-turning looks, and a full suite of safety technology, all combined in a way that our competition can't beat."

Nearly 100 AJAC voting members tested the vehicles throughout the year, scoring them anonymously on factors such as performance, features, technology, design, fuel consumption and value for money.

“Having both Chrysler Pacifica and Ram 1500 recognized as the best in their segments by the expert members of AJAC is an incredible honour,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO, FCA Canada. “The Pacifica is the most awarded minivan of the past two years, and this uniquely Canadian accolade, measured against all of its segment rivals, further proves that Pacifica delivers class-above quality, safety and functionality for families. Even faced with renewed competitors, Ram 1500’s Best Pickup Truck title proves the depth of engineering prowess and competence offered by this proven line of trucks and the strength of the Ram brand overall. This win is especially sweet, given that we’ve just made the ‘Best Pickup Truck’ of 2018, even better for 2019 with the recent introduction of an all-new Ram 1500.”

Category winners will go on to compete for Canadian Car of the Year and Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year, to be announced at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto on February 15.

“Wins in three very different categories which cover all three areas in which Jaguar Land Rover excels – SUVs, sports cars and sedans – is something to celebrate,” said Wolfgang Hoffmann, President, Jaguar Land Rover Canada, ULC, “The AJAC awards are the most prestigious in the Canadian Automotive Industry and we are very proud of the recognition of these three superbly designed and engineered vehicles.”
