November 15, 2011 NISSAN WILL INTRODUCE NV PASSENGER VAN ![]() Nissan NV3500 HD Passenger Van. “Just as we did prior to shaking up the commercial van category with the highly innovative Nissan NV, we first did our homework in the full-size van segment by studying the real-world needs, wants and desires of both families and fleet operators,” said Michael Colleran, Regional Vice-President of Field Sales and Sales Operations, Nissan Canada Inc. “As a result, we’re delivering a vehicle that offers everything owners are looking for, enhanced usability, driver and passenger comfort, flexible storage, dependability, durability and an affordable cost of ownership. Then we’ve topped it all off with signature Nissan style, performance and value.” The van will have side curtain air bags that cover all seat rows, easy entry with low step-in height, a rear HVAC system and more. “The Nissan NV3500 HD’s styling is professional and rugged outside, and completely passenger-focused inside,” said Colleran. “While you want to feel assured that there is room for all your luggage, for example, you don’t want to be treated like a piece of cargo inside. We’ve found a great balance between functionality and comfort that we believe sets the new benchmark in class.” November 21, 2011 CARSTAR UNVEILS NEW IPHONE APP CARSTAR has unveiled a new iPhone app: Unhappen My Accident. Judging criteria focused on capability and fuel consumption and included 3,629 kilogram towing, 817 kg payload, and off-roading testing. “Over two days, five judges cycled through the trucks while towing 8,000 lb travel trailers and 1,800 lb of payload. The trucks were also run empty and off-road for a total of just over 3,000 kilometres of real world testing. The Canadian Truck King Challenge congratulates Chrysler on its first place win and awards it bragging rights for 2012,” said Howard Elmer, Truck King Media Group. Other vehicles included in the challenge were Ford F-150, GMC Sierra 1500, Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan. “The testing performed by the Truck King Challenge is a great third party evaluation of the highly competitive half-ton truck segment and we are thrilled that our Ram 1500 took top honours,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO, Chrysler Canada. “The Ram 1500 is the most awarded Ram truck ever and has the longest lasting line of pickups in Canada. It’s no coincidence that more Canadian pickup buyers are switching to Ram 1500 than to any other truck.” November 7, 2011 WESTERN CANADA FACES DIESEL SHORTAGES Diesel fuel shortages have been reported at fuel vendors across western Canada, with Alberta being most seriously affected. More specifically: Petro-Canada, Suncor and Husky commercial and Cardlock sites have experienced the highest degree of product availability issues, with many sites running out of diesel product. Federated Co-ops have limited Cardlock purchases for diesel to 300 litres per day and are redirecting bulk fuels to card lock and retail sites. Esso reports no shortages at their Cardlock sites. Shell/Flying J reports no shortages at their card lock sites. Parkland companies (Bluewave, United Petroleum, and Neufeld) report no current impact, however they are quickly approaching the critical point and have begun efforts to acquire additional diesel product from other ports. UFA also reports all sites open; however, they do recommend contacting sites for diesel availability. While the third party hydrogen supply disruption at the Suncor Edmonton refinery has been a concern, the fire at the Co-Op refinery in Saskatchewan has been a major part of the Western situation. Supply issues are a result of two separate refineries being taken offline due to mechanical issues. Suncor advises that distillate production will be back on course by Nov 19. No date has been provided by Federated Co-op indicating when the issues may be corrected. Gasoline availability is not currently affected. November 1, 2011 FORD INTRODUCES LANE KEEPING TECHNOLOGY The Ford Motor Company will introduce Lane Keeping Technology on the new Ford Explorer early in 2012. The technology can detect when a driver is too tired to drive using a forward facing camera mounted behind the rearview mirror. It offers three features: a Driver Alert System which can notify drivers if it detects signs of driving drowsiness by monitoring vehicle movement and it will then sound a chime and display a coffee cup light on the dashboard to indicate its time for a driver break. Lane Keeping Alert detects whether the vehicle is drifting onto lane markings; it will then alert the driver by vibrating the steering wheel. Since not all roads are well marked, a display on the dashboard informs the driver when the system is functioning. Lane Keeping Aid produces steering torque to alert the driver to go back to the centre of a lane. The amount of steering required is calculated using distance to the lane centre, yaw angle, and curve radius. “The Explorer is loaded with new innovations, including this new lane keeping technology that helps drivers stay in control of their vehicle if they drift out of their lane or show signs of drowsiness,” said Raj Nair, Vice-President, Engineering, Ford Global Product Development. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter offers lowest cost of ownership in its class in Canada according to a study conducted by Vincentric. The study found Sprinter offers total cost of ownership 7.7 to 9.1 per cent lower than its competitors, translating into operating savings of between $6,000 to $7,000 over five years. “Our analysis of the Canadian large heavy duty van market demonstrated the benefits of measuring overall vehicle value based on total cost of ownership instead of purchase price,” said David Wurster, President, Vincentric. “Buyers often think they are saving money because they pay less at the dealership, but as we saw with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, a higher priced vehicle can provide significant savings when buyers look at the total cost of owning a vehicle.” Lower fuel costs and longer maintenance intervals were keys to Sprinter’s lower cost of ownership. The study based it's findings on a driving distance of 25,000 kilometres per year over a five year period and used factors including depreciation, fees and taxes, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, opportunity costs, and repairs. “The compelling findings of the Vincentric study and the Canadian Black Book Award further underscore what every loyal Sprinter customer already knows; the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a highly versatile and extremely practical vehicle that offers an exceptional level of ride comfort, tremendous ease of operation and an unrivaled value proposition in its respective class regardless of the business need or unique requirement,” said Tim A. Reuss, President and CEO, Mercedes-Benz Canada. For older news, click here to view our News Archive. |
