PROJECTED NEXT GENERATION FUELS REPORT
A report entitled “Projected Outlook for Next Generation and Alternative Fuels in California 2010-2030” suggests that investments and advances in alternative fuels augur that significant reductions in the use of fuels such as gasoline and diesel will result.
The report while based on data in California reflects a broader, worldwide interest in reduction of greenhouse gasses. It assumes the full effect of fuel alternatives will not be felt until about 2030 based on a projected life of between 10 to 15 years for vehicles now in service. It also projects that gasoline and diesel will still be needed for close to 80 per cent of light duty vehicles in operation in 2030.
The report predicts that bio-diesel and renewable diesel will be the major fuels to which vehicles will be moved over time; ethanol, hydrogen and electric plug-in options will be less so. In the long term the report suggests the trend for light duty vehicles will be to electrification of the drive train with electric and plug-in vehicles becoming increasingly significant between now and 2030.
