Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian’s CEO RJ Scaringe is warning the looming EV battery shortage will make current chip shortage pale in comparison. In an interview in the Wall Street Journal, Scaringe noted the small supply-demand imbalance with semiconductors resulted in overbuying and stockpiling, ultimately resulting in the massive shortage still affecting the auto industry. He see the same thing happening in the battery market adding “Semiconductors are a small appetizer to what we are about to feel on battery cells over the next two decades.” As evidence of the coming shortfall, Rivian plans to have enough batteries and chips to produce 25,000 vehicles this year, half of what it had previously planned.
