With preliminary reservations exceeding 100,000, Ford has announced plans to double its F-150 Lightning electric pickup production. A final decision on production won’t be made until closer to the 2022 launch date. Demand for EV pickups has accelerated from what expectations were just a couple of years ago with a slew of new offerings coming from established and new vehicle manufacturers. One of the factors for the increased demand is coming from commercial fleet operators who are focused on operating costs, where EVs are expected to have an advantage over ICE vehicles. In support of that Ford will be introducing a base commercial version of the Lightning with a range of 230 miles and a smaller price tag.
