First Drives Years

The first Toyota RAV4 arrived in Canada more than 22 years ago and quickly amassed a loyal fan base. The all-new fifth-generation 2019 Toyota RAV4 is sure to maintain its popularity by building upon the 4th generation, making the latest edition the most capable, fuel efficient and safe RAV4 to date.

The RAV4 offers customers three models to choose from; the gas-powered Trail model with off-roading capabilities, the Original gas-powered model and the anticipated Hybrid model, set to hit dealers by March 2019.

The exterior has changed dramatically with designers drawing inspiration from the all-new Toyota trucks on roads today. The front-end grille has a much more rugged look giving the RAV4 a brawnier stance. Ground clearance has increased by more than 15mm and side mirrors have been positioned lower on the doors for increased forward visibility. The 2019 RAV4 is roomier than its older sibling with increased rear seat legroom and a width increase of 10mm.

The 2019 RAV4 is now built on the Toyota New Global Architecture platform (TNGA-K) which provides the foundation for capability, comfort and safety. TNGA-K is the common platform for all Toyota vehicles built today. It also means that TMMC plants like Woodstock and Cambridge can switch to building many different models of Toyota vehicles with ease based on customer demand. This means a much greater and more secure future for Ontario TMMC workers, Toyota Canada and satisfied customers and suppliers.

Efficiency has increased in the 2019 RAV4 thanks to the new Dynamic Force 2.5-litre inline-four-cylinder engine with 8-speed Direct-Shift Automatic Transmission in the gas models. In the RAV4 Hybrid, the engine is teamed with Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II) with electronically controlled continuous-variable Transmission (ECVT).

The gas models have an output of 203 horsepower and 219 horsepower for the HV models. The new transmission gives drivers choice from Eco, Normal and Sport modes to tailor vehicle responses.

In addition to standard front-wheel drive, the RAV4 gas models offer all-wheel-drive which come standard on Limited gas and Trail grade models.

Standard on all AWD-equipped gas models comes the multi-terrain select feature which gives drivers the ability to maximize traction when driving through mud, sand, rocks, dirt and snow. RAV4 models include Hill Start Assist Control, Trailer Sway Control and Downhill Assist Control for optimal on-road and off-road performance and safety.

In response to customer demand, the 2019 RAV4 has expanded on the previous generation’s large cargo area by increasing the space more than 65mm and the side surfaces have been shaped for maximum space usage.

Every new RAV4 model is equipped with Entune 3.0 multimedia system which uses a 7-inch touch screen and includes Apple CarPlay compatibility.

RAV4 gas models will be offered in five grades: LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Trail and Limited. RAV4 HV will also offer five grades: LE HV, XLE HV, XSE HV, XSE HV with Technology package and Limited HV.

With safety a top priority, the  RAV4 comes standard with driver-assist technologies through the second generation of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS 2.0). The roster of safety technologies includes; Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane and Steering Assist, Automatic High Beam, New Lane Tracing Assist, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Rear Cross Traffic Braking is standard on Limited grade and Intelligent Clearance Sonar is available on Limited and XSE grade with Technology package. The RAV4 also features Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic-brake Distribution, Brake Assist, Anti-lock Braking System and Smart Stop Technology to further help prevent collisions and mitigate risk.
