As Canada’s only mid-size work van, the 2021 Metris combines versatility and maneuverability that sets a new standard for the workday.
As more people move to cities, (it’s been estimated that 70 percent of the world’s population will do so by 2025), vocational fleet operators will need versatile, durable vehicles to serve urban and rural customers alike. The 2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris fits the bill on both accounts.
The Metris comes in standard 126”and long 135” wheelbases. The 135” model has proven to be popular among vocational fleets due to its cargo volume of almost 200 cubic feet. Accompanying the impressive cargo volume numbers will be an increased payload for MY21. Combined with a vehicle height that allows access underground garages with ease, the Metris is ideal for urban work environments. For 2021, a new radiator grille has been added to the Metris in addition to optional 16” or 17” tires with steel or light allow wheels, giving it an upgraded look. The Metris comes in both cargo and passenger variants, each with increased gross vehicle weight ratings of 6834 and 6393 pounds respectively.
The Metris comes equipped with a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged gas engine designed to produce substantial torque at low rpms. Rated at 258 lb.-ft@ 1,250-4,000rpm. Combined with 208 hp @5,500 rpm, the Metris provides impressive performance throughout the operating range. Delivering this power to the wheels is a 9-speed automatic transmission 9G-TRONIC that delivers better fuel economy, reduced noise and longer service life.
New for 2021, the Metris comes standard with a 7” Touchscreen with Smartphone Integration with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Sirius Satellite Radio. With fleets in mind, the Metris offers new plastic floor covering, new seat covers and a digital interior mirror. An improved rearview camera will be displayed on the digital interior mirror, plus new vent nozzles and high-gloss black trim on the center console.
Driver safety is a top priority for fleets. For 2021 the Metris adds Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Brake Assist to its already impressive array of safety features. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC combines automatic speed regulation with proximity control in relation to a vehicle travelling in front of the van. It helps the driver maintain a safe distance from other vehicles by monitoring braking and accelerating based on the behaviors of other drivers. Active Brake Assist uses radar to detect the danger of a collision with a vehicle ahead. It alerts the driver with visual and audible warnings, supports driver braking, and in the absence of driver reaction, initiates autonomous braking.
ABA and ADA join a suite of safety features available on Metris including Attention Assist, Crosswind Assist and others. Crosswind Assist detects strong gusts of crosswind to help the driver stay on course. At speeds over 80 km/h it corrects the vehicle’s course by means of automatic braking intervention on the wheels on the side of the vehicle facing the wind. Attention Assist gives the driver visual and acoustic warnings if it detects typical signs of drowsiness or inattention, and urges the driver to take a break. Steering wheel movements are recorded and used to create an individual driver profile.
Other standard features include front, side thorax-pelvis and window air bags, load adaptive electronic stability program, trailer brake controller connection, automatic passenger airbag deactivation and tire pressure monitoring. Optional features include automatic climate control, electric sliding doors, heated and electrically adjustable mirrors, hold function, integrated navigation system and more.
Commercial fleet operators know that minimizing downtime is crucial for making the most out of the workday. With its 25,000-kilometer service intervals, Metris stays out of the shop and on the job. Mercedes-Benz has a growing network of MasterUpfitters who are experts in helping fleets design and install the right combination of shelving, bins, storage, ladder racks and more that maximize the capability of the Metris.
Mercedes-Benz stakes a claim to be the hardest working vans on the road. Backing that up is a team of dedicated Fleet account, and parts and service managers, on hand to support Metris. They understand the critical importance of keeping fleet vehicles up and running.
