General Motors will be offering subscriptions to anyone in the U.S. and Canada for its Onstar Guardian security services, going beyond only GM vehicle owners in efforts to generate recurring revenue streams. The services include roadside assistance and crash response, and will be offered through an Apple or Android smartphone app. The subscription service will be $15.00 a month after a one month free trial. The OEM sees the Onstar Guardian app as a way to tap into the $30 billion market for safety and security services, said Santiago Chamorro, GM’s vice president for connected services. Chamorro went on to say the service could be offered as part of an auto insurance bundle or marketed to people who want location based emergency response services independent of a car. Onstar is also developing new insurance offers and a data analytics product for fleet customers.
